Est. 1968 · Carolina Mountain Club and Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club
The Carolina Mountain Club and the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club have run this challenge since 1968. More than sixty Southern Appalachian summits pass 6,000 feet; forty qualify, each dropping 200 feet to the saddle joining it to another qualifier or standing three quarters of a mile from one. They fall in six ranges: the Smokies, Plotts, Balsams, Craggies, Blacks and Roans. All but Mount Le Conte lie in North Carolina or on its line with Tennessee.
